Tips for Finding Big and Tall Men’s Clothing
There was a time when going out to shop for big and tall men’s clothing wear was hated by a lot of men. Not everyone is enamored with specialty-type clothing shops, no matter what the clothes look like. But that has all changed because the more common department stores now offer clothing for bigger men. There’s also the question of vanity sizing because significantly more men are now fitting for the big and tall clothes. But it doesn’t matter, if you’re not the average size person, it can be hard to find the right size for you. Well… no worries, we’re about to share some useful tips you can use to find the right clothes that fit and that you like.
The main thing to keep in mind when choosing big and tall clothing is to avoid horizontal stripes. Horizontal strips work well on very tall and skinny men but if you fit more into the category of bigger around then you will want to stick to vertical stripes or, really, avoid strips altogether. Horizontal stripes can give you an appearance of being wider than you really are. Vertical stripes can sometimes make your torso look longer, but unfortunately the stripes can also curve around a larger belly and make it seem even rounder. Stick to solid colors or other patterns instead.
Sizes are not uniform, you can find shirts that really are the same size in different stores – but in one store it may be an XL and in a different one it’s XXL, or XXXL.
Always ask about a store’s returns policy, and never make assumptions about the size on the label. It is also a good idea to keep track of your measurements so that you have a good idea of your starting point when you shop. Begin looking at sizes that are one up from what you think your size is. So if it’s too big, or small, you’ll need one size smaller or larger.
There’s also the thrift stores to try. You’ll find that these stores usually carry big and tall men’s sizes. Thrift store prices are always a lot less than full retail shop prices, so that’s another benefit to them. If possible, find one near an affluent area because you just may be able to find really nice clothes that look very new. You’ll also discover that the other items in these well-located thrift stores are of better quality, too.
When you know where to look, you’ll find it’s easy to buy clothes that fit you, no matter what size you need. The ‘big and tall’ distinction shouldn’t be a deterrent for buying the clothing you really want. Designers are beginning to understand the importance of creating clothing that is practical in the size variations as well as the style choices. The fashion industry stigma of a decade ago has changed, so that what used to be ‘big and tall’ is now a part of the accepted sizing range. People’s idea of fashion changes frequently. The ‘big and tall’ label may actually fade into the history books as more and more people learn to embrace their own bodies and be proud to shop for clothing that fits well and looks great.
